Environmental Awards like no other

Environmental Awards like no other

25 July 2013

The value of strong partnerships was highlighted as Taranaki’s home-grown environmental awards “came of age” tonight with presentations to 16 organisations and individuals.

Winners ranged from tiny country schools to farmers, iwi and large corporates at the 21st annual presentation of the Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards.

“They show by their actions that they place great value on this region and its stunning environment that is the backbone of our thriving economy and superb lifestyle,” says the Council’s Chairman, David MacLeod.

“They also remind us of the huge effort that goes into protecting and enhancing our environment. Each year, farmers, businesses and councils in Taranaki invest tens of millions of dollars in the environment.”

He says the award winners are an example of ‘the Taranaki way’ – a strong sense of togetherness and partnership, with everyone pulling their weight and doing their bit to achieve a shared goal.

“All of this effort, by our award winners and many others like them, gives us confidence that we can look forward to a thriving and prosperous future here in Taranaki.”

Tonight’s 16 presentations take the total to 205 since the awards were inaugurated in 1993. In a departure from previous years, the presentations were made at an early-evening function in New Plymouth, instead of during a daytime meeting of the Council at its Stratford chambers.
