Council investigates temporary alcohol ban for Cup Day

Christchurch City Council staff will investigate introducing a temporary alcohol ban in Addington on Cup Day.

Spreydon / Heathcote Community Board asked the Council to consider the move after a request from Brian Thompson, General Manager Addington Event Centre, who said a ban would provide a safer environment for the public in the Addington area on Cup Day.

The Council today (Thursday) agreed that staff should look at the option and how it might be implemented.

Cup Day is 12 November.

The Board recommendation to the Council was for a 24-hour temporary liquor ban in the areas on both sides of the road along Whiteleigh Avenue, Lincoln Road, Wrights Road and Princess Street.

The ban would help control problems caused by people pre-loading with alcohol prior to entering the Addington event centre grounds and who became difficult to control later in the afternoon.

Police support the imposition of a ban.

The Council can impose a temporary alcohol ban by resolution under the Christchurch City Council Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw 2009 after considering the nature of the event, any history of alcohol problems in the area and whether the benefit outweighs the restriction.
