Auckland low risk – but be prepared

With the Wellington quakes top of mind for the nation Aucklanders should remember that being prepared to “get ready get thru” is something we should aim for every day.

Bryan Cartelle, Acting Civil Defence and Emergency Management Director, says that while Auckland is in a low earthquake risk area, they can occur at any time and recent activity in Wellington is a perfect example of this. Auckland Council has offered support to the affected Civil Defence Groups in the Wellington area however they do not require assistance at present.

“We can’t stop disasters from happening, but we can ensure that when one occurs we have thought ahead. Auckland is susceptible to a number of hazards but we can prepare our families to ‘get thru’,” he says.

“Being prepared for an emergency can be as easy as sitting down with your family and finding out what you would all do in a crisis. Working out simple things such how to meet up with your family after a disaster happens –or retrieving your family pets if you were not near your home and an earthquake hit. It is worth taking the time to invest in emergency preparedness,” says Bryan Cartelle.

The best way to start your emergency preparations is to go to the Civil Defence website and watch the videos available that show the hazards in and around Auckland. From there you can find out how to prepare for an emergency in your home, your school and at work.
