Crown Manager to be appointed to assist Council

The Christchurch City Council today invited Local Government Minister, Hon Chris Tremain to put in place a Crown Manager to address problems with its building consents processes, and help regain its accreditation from IANZ.

Following an extraordinary Council meeting today, the full Council met with Local Government Minister, Hon Chris Tremain, and Building and Construction Minister, Hon Maurice Williamson, to establish the terms of reference.
Mayor Bob Parker says the Council appreciates the support of the Ministers and welcomes the appointment of a Crown Manager to help the Council address issues with building consents.

“We need to fix this situation, and look forward to a constructive and collaborative partnership with the Crown Manager.

”The Crown Manager will enable us to have a full and frank evaluation of the situation, give us a clearer picture, and identify the actions we need to take to turn this situation around.

"This is a crucial first step in the path to restoring the confidence of the people of Christchurch in the Council’s consents process.

“We want to make sure we’re not a roadblock to the recovery.

“Our highest priority will be to look at the building consents the Council has granted and provide people with confidence in our decisions.”

The Crown Manager will start work on 15 July and unless otherwise advised by the Minister of Local Government, will remain with the Council up to 31 December 2014.

Within four weeks of commencing, the Crown Manager is expected to provide an initial action plan to the Minister of Local Government and the Minister of Building and Construction.
