Information evening being held for council candidates

ROTORUA 28.06.13: An information evening is being held at Rotorua District Council (RDC) next month for those interested in standing for a position on the council in the coming local government elections.

The event is taking place on Monday 22 July at 7pm at the council Civic Centre.

RDC Corporate & Customer Services group manager, Jean-Paul Gaston, said electoral officer Warwick Lampp and others will talk about roles on the council, the nature of the work, legal obligations, the time commitment and workloads.

“This is a good opportunity for anyone who’s intending to stand for the position of mayor, councillor, or Rotorua Lakes Community Board member to get some understanding of what these roles involve and what they need to do if they want to become a candidate.”

Mr Gaston said legislation just passed through Parliament this week has set the dates for nominations for positions on the council. Nominations will now open on Friday 19 July and close at 12 noon sharp on Friday 16 August.

Candidate information packs are currently being prepared and copies will be available from the council’s Customer Centre from Wednesday 17 July, and at the information evening on 22 July.

Voting papers will be delivered to eligible voters between 20 to 25 September, with Special Voting taking place from 20 September to 12 October.

The elections will be a postal ballot as usual, with Election Day on 12 October.
