Govt’s AMETI and East-West Link commitment will delight business
The Prime Minister’s ‘Backing Auckland’ speech today is great news for business groups who have been pushing for action on key transport projects for years particularly in the south-east, says Auckland Councillor for Orakei Cameron Brewer, who chairs Auckland Council’s Business Advisory Panel.
“The south eastern part of Auckland is one of the fastest growing areas in Australasia and is home to a lot of industry and business that is choking in traffic. It’s really significant news that the Government will fast-track the funding for both the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative and East-West Link projects.
“The East-West Link between East Tamaki and Onehunga is critical as is delivering the entire AMETI project. Auckland’s business community has been calling for some real funding commitment and action for years, and now they’ve got it. It will be music to their ears, because rest assured they’ve been chewing ours!
“As an eastern suburbs councillor, there has been a genuine local concern that if AMETI was to be done over prolonged stages, congestion would only be dumped locally. However the Government’s latest commitment to finish the whole project a lot quicker only means quicker benefits for both business and communities,” says Mr Brewer.
