Auckland enjoys surge in international visitor arrivals

Auckland has seen an impressive 12 per cent leap in international visitor arrivals for the month of May 2013, according to the latest results from Statistics New Zealand.

This adds to growth in arrivals of two per cent in April, and jumps of 11 and 13 per cent in February and March respectively.

Collectively Auckland has experienced a six per cent increase in international visitor arrivals since the start of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, with all key visitor
markets demonstrating growth.

For the month of May 2013 Auckland’s consistently strong visitor markets of China and Australia were up 32 per cent and 14 per cent respectively on last year.

Arrivals from the traditional long haul market of the United States grew by nine per cent and the United Kingdom, which has been stagnant for some time, was up three per cent.

ATEED Manager Tourism Jason Hill says this is the strongest consistent growth pattern that Auckland has seen in several years.

“It is excellent to see the positive summer visitation flow through into the traditional shoulder season months of April and May, and for our challenging long-haul markets to be
back in growth,” he says.

Auckland’s strong visitor arrival figures will help to support ATEED’s work to grow the overall visitor economy in line with the targets in its 10-year Auckland Visitor Plan.

ATEED – on behalf of Auckland Council – aims to double the contribution from the visitor economy, growing it from $3.33 billion in 2010 to $6 billion in 2021.
