Comment on WRC fare structure

[Re: Greater Wellington Regional Council - Clear direction agreed for public transport fares]
Comment from Cr Paul Bruce
Councillor Paul Bruce strongly supported the fare structure, noting that Public Transport Voice had also made the call for fare packages which rewarded those that used the service, with fare capping on a daily or monthly basis, and in addition providing free weekend travel for children travelling with their parents. He added, "Multiple economic benefits to society and the individual result from a shift from a private vehicle to public transport. An internal NZTA paper quantifies this as $30 per day. These economic benefits result from improved health (exercise and reduced emissions), safety (reduction in accidents), reduced traffic flows with consequent reduction in congestion and impact on the environment, land use/parking savings."
However, Cr Bruce also recommended a 50% concession for students, on the basis that students are constrained in accommodation and transport choices while studying, and that a tertiary student fare concession would provide an opportunity to support both students and the training institutions. This last recommendation was not approved by Council.
