North Island Skiing Just Days Away…
June 27, 2013:  Just days away from the opening of Mt Ruapehu's Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields snow has arrived in the Central North Island's stunning winter playground and new website www.RealWinter.co.nz makes it easy for families to plan and book a winter break, complete with ideas for fun family activities on and off the mountain.
Mt Ruapehu Customer Relations Manager Annah Dowsett says, “The recent storm has brought great snow cover to both Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas and we are on track to open The Alpine Meadow, The Parklane and Giant at Turoa and Happy Valley skifields at Whakapapa on June 29th as scheduled." Check out www.mtruapehu.com for details.
The new website, www.RealWinter.co.nz makes it easy to incorporate touching the snow into a family break to the region this winter. It has ideas for places to eat and stay plus a wide range of things to do aimed at the family market.
Hot pools after a day’s skiing is a must. Taupo DeBretts are offering a ‘Stay & Soak’ Special for $189 including accommodation and all day pool passes. Explore the Dual World Heritage Listed Tongariro National Park. Kids go free with a full paying adult on Adrift Guided Outdoor Adventures 2-hour Sunset Tour. Learn to ski or snowboard with The Discover Ski package from Ruapehu Alpine Lifts including a lift pass for the beginners’ area, gear hire and a lesson for just $110 per adult and $80 per child.
General Manager Destination Great Lake Taupo, Vanessa Freeman suggests, “Plan to get away from the city for several breaks this winter.  With the early promise of great skiing, and heaps of activities on offer, there’s something to entertain every member of the family."
Off the mountain and back in town, Taupo’s beautifully designed town centre has pedestrian friendly streets, an abundance of cafes serving great coffee and a great children’s playground.
With ‘dad on duty’, mums will enjoy some retail therapy in the many boutique fashion stores and art galleries.  The new season trout fishing license goes on sale 1 July, so dads may have booked up enough credits to enjoy a day out fly fishing on the Tongariro River.
Free things to do are also abundant - from visiting the majestic Huka Falls, to a family bike ride around the Lakefront to a visit to the Tokaanu Thermal Walk – the Great Lake Taupo region has activities to suit every budget.
