Fluoridated Drinking Water Being Supplied to Waikato

The smart people at Just Water New Zealand have come up with a service for the Waikato. With their well-known bottled water delivery service, they are now offering to deliver their bulk 15 litre bottles of fluoridated water direct to homes.

“Such is the strong feeling in the Waikato area over the removal of fluoride from the water supply that Just Water is providing up to 500 homes with the loan of a free water cooler, so that they can continue to drink fluoridated water” said Tony Falkenstein, the Chief Executive of Just Water.

The furore over the Hamilton City Council voting to discontinue the fluoridation of the city’s water supply continues to rage unabated, with extremely vocal supporters on both sides. Here is part of a quote from a statement attributed to Dr Felicity Dumble, Medical Officer of Health, Waikato District Health Board. “We are very disappointed in the result of the Hamilton City Council vote following the Tribunal. The councillors who voted it out discounted the mainstream opinion of the vast majority of dentists and doctors in Hamilton and in New Zealand. Based on the 2006 referendum and the 2013 residents’ survey they have also not voted in line with the wishes of the majority of Hamilton residents who want fluoridate retained. They instead listened to a highly vocal minority (many of whom are not Hamilton residents) and as a result the oral health of Hamilton residents will suffer, dental Decay will increase and DHB dental services will be stretched and resource will need to be reallocated. It’s not just about the costs of treatment but the additional pain and misery associated with avoidable tooth decay.”

Dr Dumble goes on to explain that fluoridation has provided additional benefit (to the multiple strategies to improve and protect oral health already invested in by the District Health Board), with 10% more mouths without decay in areas with Community Water Fluoridation, compared to those without, proof, in her eyes, that adding fluoride to the city water supply is undoubtedly working.

Just Water has always endorsed the fluoridation of its drinking water, whereas most small bottled water companies extract the fluoride.
