Family Violence DVD for Northland
A competition is underway to find a piece of music for a DVD focusing on the harm caused by family violence.
The Northland District Health Board, in conjunction with Northland Police, is developing a DVD to increase awareness of
the problem of family violence.
Whangärei/Kaipara Area Commander Inspector Tracy Phillips says the DVD entitled 'Enough Is Enough' will use the stories
of Northlanders affected by family violence to emphasise the harm caused by this crime to the family and the community.
"It reinforces the message that Northlanders will not accept family violence in their homes and focuses on the Northland
Community PRIDE message of Protect, Respect, Involve, Develop and Educate."
Ms Phillips says the DVD also stresses that it is okay for people to ask for help when they are being beaten and
psychologically abused by family members they love in their own homes.
Police and Northland Health plan to make the DVD available on TV screens in hospital emergency and outpatient
departments and through non-government agencies (NGOs) such as Women's Refuge, Life Line, Salvation Army, and community
health and social providers.
Production on the DVD will be starting soon and the producers are looking for a theme song or instrumental for the DVD
and are asking local artists to send in a composition.
The piece of music can be one to two minutes long and needs to have a Northland flavour around family violence themes
such as "it's not okay" and the ripple effect such violence has on the community.
"The DVD tells the story of people affected by family violence and it seems right to hold a competition for the theme
song, so local people can also tell a story through music," says Ms Phillips.
Entries must be in audio format such as MPEG 4 and can be sent to Liora McMurtrie, Whangärei Police Station, Private Bag
9016, Whangärei 0140 or dropped off at the Whangärei Police Station (addressed to Liora McMurtrie)
Entries close on Friday July 26.
