Kapiti Coast Storm Clean Up

Kāpiti Coast District Council has approximately around 20 field staff as well as contractors currently working as part of the storm clean up. Staff are removing fallen trees, branches etc. on roadways/footpaths/parks and several properties.

They are also assessing parks and open spaces for any potentially dangerous trees or branches that have broken and hung up in the higher parts of the trees (ready to fall on someone).

Arborists have been employed to tackle some of the larger trees although a number have been cordoned off until the wind dies down and conditions are safer.

All streams and open drains are being assessed to ensure no trees or debris have come down and blocked culverts or waterways (flooding potential).

After hours/standby staff were not too busy last night and early this morning, only deploying generators to pump stations that had no power.

Compared to greater Wellington, Kapiti seems to have gotten off pretty lightly.

The Paekākāriki Hill Road is closed until at least 6pm because of slips on the Porirua side. Waterfall Road is closed to all but residents.

Part of the roof has blown off the Raumati South Memorial Hall and the hall is likely to be closed for at least two weeks. A garage sale to be held in the hall on Sunday has been cancelled

There is a tree down on Rodney Grove and Rauhine Street, a large tree has fallen on the corner of Peka Peka and Paetawa Road. Trees are down in the Maungatukutuku Valley

Most sportsfields in the district are likely to be closed this weekend. More information can be obtained by ringing Sportsline 2964720.
