Heavy Rain Update 7 1700hrs
A huge effort by a large team of contractors has opened most roads in the district. Contractors will rest overnight ready for another big day tomorrow.
Roading Information
All roads will be passable by sundown, except the following which remain closed:
• Totaranui Road
• Graham Valley Road
• Peach Island Road – bridge approach washed out. Bridge passed assessment by structural engineer, work on restoring approach will begin Tuesday morning.
Travel on the following roads is not recommended due to unstable slip material, narrow sections with limited visibility and slippery surface. Road users are advised to take extreme care and drive to the conditions if they must use them. Overnight – many single lane sections remain and have been delineated with cones and signs.
Riwaka/Motueka/Tapawera Area:
• Motueka Valley Highway, from College St to Ngatimoti.
• Motueka River West Bank Road, from Old Mill Road to Herring Stream
• Marahau Valley Road – will be open this evening
• Riwaka-Kaiteriteri Road
• Kaiteriteri-Sandy Bay Road
• Riwaka-Sandy Bay Road
• Riwaka Valley Road
• Brooklyn Valley Road
• Tapawera-Baton Road – will be open this evening
Golden Bay Area:
• McCallum Road – open
• Pupu Valley Road – open
• McShane Road – open
Utilities
• There have been minor sewage overflows in Golden Bay in Collingwood, Pohara and Clifton. People are advised to not take any shellfish or swim until the area has been cleared.
• There is a need for a cleanup of wastewater overflows and undertake additional testing of water supplies.
Weather Forecast (Including Weather Warnings, Areas Affected and High Tide Times)
The next high tide will be will be 15:37 hr on 17 June. It is not a very high tide level at present (3.4 m).
The latest Met Service update at 12:00 is that we may get between 0 - 5mm of rain later this afternoon, mainly in western part of region. The band containing previously mentioned 20mm is now forecast to track across the lower North Island.
The situation report for all New Zealand issued at 11:03am Monday 17 June 2013 is that there is a broad complex trough over the South Island directs a disturbed northwest flow over the North Island
Additionally the University of Victoria met-site forecast indicates only lighter rain fall for the area toady also. The MetService radar shows heavier rain to the north of our region, so only if this changes direction and tracks south would we get the heavier falls.
