Old Waimakariri Bridge temporarily closing

Old Waimakariri Bridge temporarily closing

The Old Waimakariri Bridge will be closing for seven days to allow earthquake repair work to take place. The temporary closure period will be from 6am on Monday 24 June, reopening at 6pm on Sunday 30 June.

Unit Manager of Transport and Greenspace John Mackie says, "We appreciate that this work will inconvenience motorists, and apologise for this in advance, but we are confident that this repair work will make the bridge better able to cope during the flood season.

"We would ask all road users to plan ahead with their travel arrangements during this period, so as to allow themselves ample time in reaching their destinations."

The repair work will be under the bridge, strengthening the bridge abutment, pier cap and piles. Throughout the temporary closure, there will still be access across the bridge for cyclists and pedestrians.

These repairs being undertaken by contractors are a joint project between the Christchurch City Council and the Waimakariri District Council.

For any questions or concerns you may have please contact the Christchurch City Council Call Centre on 0800 800 169 or (03) 941 8999. More information on the project is available on the Waimakariri District Council website at www.waimakariri.govt.nz
