Corrections' end of day statement: Spring Hill Corrections

Corrections' end of day statement: Spring Hill Corrections Facility

The situation at Spring Hill Corrections Facility has been resolved. We will continue to have a heavy staff presence throughout the night, including our specialist teams.

We currently have three staff and two prisoners being assessed by medical staff.

At no time was there any danger to the public from the actions of the prisoners, as the specialist teams responded as they are trained to do and brought the situation under control.

Police, ambulance and fire services remain in attendance and will also have a continued presence over night as a precautionary measure.

“We are grateful for the assistance that we have received throughout this incident from our partner agencies”, Northern Regional Commissioner Jeanette Burns says.

“This was a serious event and regrettable”, says Ms Burns. “The objective to successfully bring this situation to an end with minimal disruption and with minimal injury to staff and prisoners has been achieved, although the corrections officers’ injuries may include suspected fractures.

“In these kinds of events I am unwilling go into details about our further plans but I must say how proud I am of the actions of my staff. We are looking to relocate some prisoners, but will not be releasing any further details for security reasons”.

Investigations into this serious incident will begin immediately with both Corrections and Police staff undertaking these inquiries. Charges will most likely result.
