Ski areas on track for season opening 29th June

More Snow Falling at Mt Ruapehu
Ski areas on track for season opening 29th June
MT RUAPEHU, NEW ZEALAND (May 29, 2013) – Cold temperatures overnight and continued steady snowfall has seen the pre-season snow base at Mt Ruapehu take shape leading into the winter ski season.

Temperatures at Mt Ruapehu were down to -6 degrees overnight and more snow has fallen. In addition to the natural snowfall, snow guns in the beginner area at the Whakapapa Ski Area have been in action making snow throughout the night.

Mt Ruapehu General Manager - Operations, Chris Thrupp says the cold weather has bought with it even more snowfall to both ski areas.

“More snow has fallen overnight due to the storm we’ve been experiencing. A further 15cms of snow has fallen at the base area of the mountain and an additional 25cms on the upper slopes, with drifts up to waist deep in places,” says Mr Thrupp.

“The quality of the snow is dry and light and snow is still falling. Strong winds mean we’re seeing the gullies start to fill up and a good snow base start to develop on both sides of the mountain.”

“Cold temperatures are forecast to stick around later into the week, so these ideal snowmaking conditions will make for a solid base when both Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas open on the 29th of June,” he says.

Turoa Mountain Road and the Bruce Road to the Mt Ruapehu Ski Area’s are today closed due to snow.

For real-time snow progress, live webcams at both Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas show up-to-the minute updates. To see for yourself, visit www.mtruapehu.com.
