Kiwi Lifestyle under Attack
Right now the Auckland Council is seeking feedback on the Unitary Plan. The Unitary Plan will be Auckland’s planning
“rulebook”, setting out where and how the region grows in the future.
It will replace former district and regional plans with one document.
It is very important that you become engaged in this process as each of us will be affected in some way.
Badly affected will be those whose properties are in the proposed Terrace Housing and Apartment Building Zone (THAB).
This will allow for apartment buildings up to eighteen storeys in some areas outside of the Auckland CBD which have
traditionally been low rise suburbs. It is quite possible the leafy green suburbs loved by Aucklanders become an area
marked for high rise apartments.
In the Mixed Housing Zone (MH) which will cover half of suburban of Auckland three storey apartments could be built and
residents will have no say. Additionally, if a developer is able to accumulate over 1200 square metres (just two
adjoining sections in most suburbs) with a 20 metre road frontage there is no density limit. In other words, a developer
can squeeze in as many dwellings as possible and since seventy per cent of a development with twenty or more dwellings
may be as small as thirty square metres it has the potential for overcrowding and associated social problems.
In my view the the New Zealand way of life is under attack from your Council.
