Free City Wi-Fi on the cards for Nelson

Nelson Mayor, Aldo Miccio, today announced his intention to bring free wireless Internet to Nelson’s CBD prior to Christmas.

In the wake of this week’s announcement that Nelson has won New Zealand’s top Google eTown award, Mr Miccio says this should be a natural and desirable progression for the city’s economic growth.

Mr Miccio says, “We’re currently in discussions with a private provider and hope to be able to present plans before council very shortly. Ideally we’d like to have free Wi-Fi available in the CBD before Christmas."

According to the Statistics New Zealand 2012 Internet Service Providers Survey, more than half of New Zealanders are now accessing the Internet via a mobile phone. With the total number of Internet connections via a mobile phone increasing by a third, to more than 2.5 million in the previous 12 months.

Mr Miccio says, "Free wireless Internet is an integral initiative for Nelson with multiple benefits. It will increase the capabilities of local businesses, bring people into the CBD, and assert Nelson as a prominent business community."
