Mayor grateful as local Mums share their vision for the City
Nelson Mayor, Aldo Miccio, joined forces with local Mums today for morning tea at the Bridge Street Café. The informal gathering was held to encourage Mums to share their hopes for the City and their children’s future in the region.
As a celebration of Mothers Day this Sunday, Mayor Miccio said that it had been immensely useful to hear what the Mothers had to say about current and future initiatives for the growth and development of Nelson.
“Mothers make a significant contribution to society and it’s crucial that the Moving It Forward vision for Nelson is meaningful and meets the expectations of the families that form our community,” he says.
“We asked the Mums to take part in a simple survey and indicate the level of importance for various future Council initiatives they would like to see come to fruition.”
It was evident from the survey that many of the Mums wanted rates to be kept low and debt to a minimum, however their main concerns were to provide excellent pathways for their children. Charlotte from Nelson said that for her the most important thing for her family would be good education options and career prospects for her three children when they finish school.
“We’ve recently moved to Nelson from overseas and I’m very aware that my children will be pulled away by the bigger city environment. We all want our children to spread their wings, but we also hope they will eventually find good jobs in their own home where they have their family’s support,” Charlotte says.
Miccio’s own Mother, Cristina said that she felt heartened to see so many local Mums willing to publicly voice their opinions, and was pleased to see her son looking to the community for their direct input.
“It’s reassuring that parents want to ensure a better future for their children,” says Cristina. “When Aldo was growing up in Nelson there were very few opportunities, which meant many of the kids in the community went away to fulfill their ambitions. Nelson goes from strength to strength and I hope my grandchildren will find happy futures in their home town.”
Miccio concluded that he always enjoyed working with the community and would be focusing his efforts upon continuing the various projects that are in development for his current term.
