Reading Crusade Prize-Giving

100 lucky kids who have completed Christchurch City Libraries’ Reading Crusade challenge have been invited to the
prize-giving, where they will meet three Crusaders.
Selected at random to attend the prize-giving, the children will not only be able to rub shoulders with and ask
questions of Zac Guildford, Corey Flynn and Jeremy Su’a, they will have the chance to win heaps of spot prizes including
signed Crusaders merchandise. At least one child will win a stack of books as high as themselves courtesy of
Christchurch Paper Plus stores. The prize-giving will include an introduction from Mayor Bob Parker.
After the ceremony, the Crusaders will remain to sign autographs, take pictures and afterwards speak to media. The event
is not open to the public.
Around 3500 children throughout Christchurch completed the Reading Crusade, an initiative which has seen Christchurch
City Libraries team up with the Canterbury Rugby Football Union to once again rally behind the development of great
reading habits among children. The competition kicked off in schools on Monday 11 March.
“Traditionally, it’s a special challenge trying to convince boys to read, and having heroes and role models like the
Crusaders on board is an extra incentive for young men to connect with the programme, take its message to heart and
start reading,” says Carolyn Robertson, Libraries and Information Unit Manager.
· Approximately 3500 children completed reading logs.
· Children from 84 different schools completed reading logs, either individually or with their school/class.
· The most frequently occurring age was 10 years.
· 57 per cent of entrants were girls and 43 per cent were boys.
