New Volunteering Guide Launched
New Volunteering Guide
Launched
ROTORUA 03.05.13: Rotorua
District Council’s (RDC) Settlement Support and
Citizen’s Advice Bureau have launched the updated
Volunteering Guide to help newcomers settle into the
community.
RDC Settlement Support coordinator
Heather McAllister said the guide was initially produced in
2008 in response to the increasing number of queries they
received from migrants about getting involved in the
community.
“We’ve gradually been improving the
Volunteering Guide each year, adding more information and
photos of volunteering opportunities in our community, as
well as tips to help people start volunteering. The new
guide is now a more polished version than previous years and
the information is easier to find.”
Ms McAllister
said that while volunteers give their time without getting
paid, there are many benefits to
volunteering.
“Volunteering gives newcomers the
opportunity to meet new people and make local connections,
learn new skills, gain useful experience that could be used
in the workplace, give others the benefit of their
experience, and to practice their English language
skills.”
The updated Volunteering Guide is
available from Rotorua District Council, Rotorua District
Library, and Citizens Advice Bureau. The online version can
be viewed at rotoruanz.com/settlement under
the ‘Get Involved in the Community’
section.
