Senior Planner Commended By Peers
Palmerston North City Council’s senior policy planner Jonathan Ferguson-Pye has received a commendation for his entry in the New Zealand Planning Institute’s Best Practice Award.
The commendation recognises outstanding creativity, innovation and service for his work on District Planning for Proposed Plan Change 1 (PPC1).
PPC1 was the first plan change promoted as part of the Palmerston North City Sectional District Plan Review. The plan change reviewed the Inner and Outer Business Zones of the Palmerston North City District Plan. It successfully introduced an integrated centres based planning approach to managing commercial activity and provided greater control over urban design matters.
Jonathan Ferguson-Pye says he is humbled by the commendation. “It can be a daunting experience when you’re up against your colleagues from throughout the country – however the experience of putting my work out there to be judged by others has strengthened my professional ability and resolve. I thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone wanting to test their professional abilities.”
“PPC1 is a visionary plan change that set a comprehensive planning framework to control development in the city centre over the next 20 years,” says Mr Ferguson-Pye. “It represents the completion of the final stage of the Council’s Retail Strategy, which recognised that it was areas supported by pedestrian-based core retailing that were most at risk from large format retail development establishing on the periphery of the city.”
The Commendation was formally presented at the NZPI Awards Ceremony at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton earlier this evening.
