Remembering the Sacrifice of Dr Helen Schofield

The Franklin Zoo Trust would like to thank supporters and the public for their encouragement and resources over this past year as we have cared for Mila the Elephant.

Mila's keeper and friend, Dr Helen Schofield died one year ago on Anzac Day, 25th of April 2012, as a result of a tragic accident. She was integral to the life of the animals and the survival of the Franklin Zoo facility. Since her death, Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary has since closed to the public and more than 450 animals have now been re-homed. Some to facilities across the Tasman and some here in New Zealand. All however are now being looked after and cared for extremely well in loving environments.

Mila is one of the last residents at Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary and is being cared for by a specialist elephant trainer (who has worked with more than 30 elephants) and keepers dedicated to her rehabilitation and care. Mila is doing incredibly well and is improving on a daily basis.

She will however need to be re-homed to ensure she will be able to live out the rest of her life with other elephants. The date of her departure and the destination are still unknown.

The Franklin Zoo Charitable Trust would like to again thank the people of New Zealand for their support. From helping us feed Mila, to donating to the potential move. We couldn't have done any of this without your generosity. We do still however need to raise funds to ensure Mila gets the retirement she deserves.
