Good Take-up on TV TakeBack
The nationwide TV TakeBack scheme is proving a success locally. Over 450 TVs have been dropped off for recycling in the Queenstown Lakes District so far.
The scheme, which allows people to recycle old TVs for just $5, was launched to take care of the large number of sets expected to be thrown out due to the changeover to a completely digital TV service on Sunday 28 April.
Queenstown Lakes District Council solid waste manager Stefan Borowy says the scheme is a win for everyone.
“TV TakeBack offers a saving to the consumer as well as being beneficial to the environment by making sure that hazardous materials don’t end up in landfill,” he said.
TVs contain hazardous materials like lead which can leach into soil and water. They also contain many resources which can be recycled.
Anyone thinking of recycling an old TV is advised to get in quickly. The Queenstown Lakes District has a quota of 1,251 sets and once it’s filled, the price reverts to the normal fee of $25.
464 sets have been recycled so far – 281 in Wanaka and 183 in Queenstown.
There are five drop off points where people can take their old TVs for recycling – Frankton Transfer Station, Wanaka Wastebusters, Smith City Queenstown and Wanaka and Noel Leeming Queenstown.
