Council proposing to review District Plan

Christchurch City Council will tomorrow consider a report recommending that it begin its District Plan review.

Since the release of the draft Land Use Recovery Plan on 22 March, the City and Environment Canterbury (ECan) have been working together to identify a better solution to issues around town planning.

“Over the past month we’ve been in discussion with ECan about how we can better achieve the town planning outcomes we all agree the city needs, post-earthquake,” says Councillor Sue Wells, Chair of Christchurch City Council’s Planning Committee.

“Our current City Plan was never designed with earthquake recovery in mind, and essentially is not up to the job. We are proposing to go ahead with a full review of the Christchurch City Plan and the Banks Peninsula District Plan ¬¬to address immediate and long-term planning needs. Our first priority will be around earthquake recovery matters.”

Environment Canterbury Commissioner Peter Skelton says ECan is very pleased to have been able to engage with the City Council in this very important matter for the city’s future.

“I am delighted with this proposal to undertake a review of the District Plan, as part of the Land Use Recovery Plan process,” says Professor Skelton.

Mayor Bob Parker says this is a great example of the two councils working closely together for the benefit of the Christchurch community going forward.

“Collaborating with our partners to achieve sound planning for the city in future is a vital role for Christchurch City Council,” says Mayor Parker.

The report has been added to the agenda for the Council meeting on Wednesday 24 April.
