Auckland Transport media release

A big boost for ferry patronage

The long summer saw more Aucklanders taking to the water and using the city’s ferry services. In March the number of people using the ferries was up 9 per cent to 555,143.

Auckland Transport says these figures are very strong and for the first time include the new Hobsonville and Beach Haven service which is performing ahead of expectations. Extra sailings have also been added to Pine Harbour.

For the year to the end of March five-and-a-half million people used ferry services.

The trains also saw a daily increase in the number of passengers. Average daily weekday passenger numbers were up 4.5 per cent on March last year.

The number of trips on the trains in March was 1,002,967.

Average daily weekday patronage increased by 2.6 per cent on the Northern Express bus service.

Overall bus patronage was down slightly in March, compared to last year, because Easter meant there were two less business days.
