Safety Barrier
to Be Installed on Rotowaro Rail Bridge
Walkway
The handrail on the
Rotowaro rail bridge walkway in Huntly will be replaced with
a barrier in May to increase pedestrian safety.
The bridge crosses the river from the west on Bridge Street, near Huntly College, to the southern end of the main street.
The work is scheduled to begin at the start of May and is expected to be completed within three weeks.
Waikato District Council Acting General Manager Service Delivery Stephen Cox said the new barrier would offer a higher level of safety to pedestrians and comply with KiwiRail standards.
“Safety around train tracks is paramount. The new barrier will reduce the risk of pedestrians crossing from the provided walkway onto the train tracks by increasing the height,” he said.
Mr Cox said the new barrier would still allow room for maintenance to the bridge structure.
Pedestrian access will remain open throughout the construction however people are advised to avoid the bridge if possible and exercise caution if they do need to cross it.
The work is to be carried out by Strada Corporation Ltd.
If anyone has any issues relating to the construction they are asked to contact the council on 0800 492 452.
