Whangarei Visitor Plan To Support & Create Vibrant Industry

Media Release

Whangarei Visitor Plan To Support And Create A Vibrant Industry

The draft Whangarei 2013-2016 Visitor Plan will be launched to industry operators today.

The three year Plan, is supported by a shorter ‘highlights’ version, which provides a one year snap shot of what can be done to grow our visitor industry.

“We believe our biggest opportunity at this point should be our Auckland neighbours as 45% of our visitors are already from Auckland,” said Tania McInnes WDC Tourism and Promotions Manager

“We want to target people to take short breaks for some rest and relaxation in Whangarei.

“We have a lot to offer, fantastic natural resources and we should be working together to develop world-class experiences here,” she said.

“The plan has been developed by Whangarei District Council, in consultation with industry representatives, now we are inviting all local operators to provide feedback on the plan.

“We need to ‘think differently’ and challenge our own thinking about our perceptions of Whangarei and what we offer, which is where the Whangarei:Love it Here! brand came from.

“We also need to challenge the thinking of others, in a positive way, our visitors and neighbours to really lift perceptions.

“There are always areas where we can improve and it’s important to realise we each need to make the effort, we need to lift our service levels in some areas and generally be a bit more professional,” she said.

“The plan has been created by Council but it’s for the Whangarei Tourism Industry to own so over the next two weeks we encourage them all to provide their feedback. Then run with it, use it and make it there own.

“Whangarei’s ticket to becoming the hub for amazing visitor experiences in Northland starts with us doing it well ‘in our own backyard’.

“This more than anything else will move us towards a sustainable and prosperous tourism future. If we want to see a thriving industry and enjoy the benefits that this brings then everyone needs to do their bit.

“One or two businesses doing it alone is not enough, we need the majority to make a difference,” Ms McInnes said.
