Total fire ban still in force across
Whangarei and Kaipara Districts
Residents and visitors are reminded that a total fire ban still in force across Whangarei and Kaipara Districts.
Principal Rural Fire Officer Kevin Ihaka said there have been small amounts of rain in iso¬lated pockets but not been enough consistent rain to warrant removing the fire ban at this stage.
“We have had to deal with a handful of small rubbish fires in both Whangarei and Kaipara Districts. Most have been straight after rain, just before nightfall and leading into the night. These fires are dangerous, illegal and a nuisance,” Mr Ilhaka said.
“‘Total Fire Ban’ means no fires in the open air, this in¬cludes rubbish fires unless in an approved incinerator. An open drum is not approved and a lighting a pile of rubbish on the ground is definitely not approved.
“If caught, people face prosecu¬tion and covering the costs of put their ille¬gal fire out. Gas barbeques are permitted but always make sure you have a suitable extinguisher handy.
“Further rain is predicted for later this week but we need a significant amount to call things safe across Kaipara and Whangarei District,” he said.
“As we move further into au¬tumn, the countryside is becom¬ing greener but it’s still not yet safe to burn.
“Authorities monitor the situa¬tion on a daily basis and will put out a public notice when the fire ban is cancelled,” he said.
