Peg it or you may lose it, says Fish & Game

Peg it or you may lose it, says Fish & Game

Immediate release 4/4/2013

All six North Island Fish & Game Regions are urging game bird hunters to get out before this Sunday’s deadline and ‘peg’ or claim their last season’s maimai, stand or hide.

The tagging has to be done before 10am on Sunday April 7, 2013 – if hunters are to avoid the disappointment of losing their favourite hunting spot.

“Pegging a favourite maimai on public land will potentially give a hunter the best chance to harvest birds over opening weekend and the season that follows,” says Grant Dyson, Fish & Game’s North Island communications advisor.

To reclaim your spot for the upcoming season you will first need to purchase your 2013/14 Game Bird licence, which contains your claim tag.

Mr Dyson also notes that the hunter who’s tagged the maimai only has the ‘first rights’ to occupy it within the first hour on any day during the hunting season. If the stand claimant hasn’t arrived in that hour, then the maimai is able to be used by any other licensed hunter for the remainder of the day.”

Mr Dyson advises hunters to remember to check regional regulations for variations to species, bag limits and other regulations.

Auckland/Waikato and Eastern Regions for example, will have a short four week season for grey and mallard ducks running from Saturday May 4, to June 3, while other North Island regions’ seasons run for longer.

Hunters in all regions are urged to take advantage of the longer season for upland game birds, including pheasants and quail, which runs from May 4 to August 25.
