Parking in the
CBD
People who use car parks in the CBD might find their favourite spots out of commission over the next few weeks as the Queenstown Lakes District Council works to finish all scheduled projects before winter weather sets in.
A number of road rebuilds are on the agenda, with work on Athol Street and the Athol Street Carpark already started and Earl Street and Marine Parade scheduled to begin on Monday 8 April. Work is also underway on the Upper Brecon Street Carpark beside the Queenstown Childcare Centre and Wakatipu Kindergarten.
QLDC GM Infrastructure Erik Barnes said while the work had been programmed to cause as little disruption as possible, some inconvenience was inevitable.
“We’ve tried to keep closures to a minimum by keeping one lane open and to do that we’ve had to close off some side parking on these streets for the duration of the works,” he said.
“The amount of parking available in the Athol Street Carpark has also been reduced temporarily.”
Earl Street and Marine Parade would have one lane access throughout the process but there would be some night time closures for Athol Street, including the Carpark from 8pm to 6am on Wednesday 3 April, Monday 8 April and Monday 15 April.
Repairs to the surface of the Upper Brecon Street Carpark are underway and while it would remain open during the work period, the number of parks available would be temporarily halved. Resealing of the Carpark would take place from the 20 April onwards to tie in with the school holidays.
All the projects were scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
