Canterbury Water Kaikoura Zone Committee Meeting

24 March 2013

Canterbury Water Kaikoura Zone Committee Meeting

The Kaikoura Zone Committee will meet for the second time this year on Wednesday, 27 March, for its monthly water management public meeting.

The meeting will begin with an update from the Regional Committee, which covers region-wide environmental restoration and repair; land use impacts on water quality; as well as water storage, distribution and efficiency options.

The committee will then receive a report from local high school students on their vision for Waikoau Lyell Creek, and how to help implement it.

The committee helped host a youth hui last week that aimed to increase awareness and understanding of local water use and management. It included a field-trip, work-shop, and over-night stay at Takahanga Marae.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the committee will also confirm its schedule for implementing the on-the-ground work in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management.

The ZIP brings together the committee’s recommendations for water management in the zone to achieve the goals and targets set out in CWMS - to enable future generations the greatest social, economic, recreational, cultural benefits from our water resources within a sustainable framework.

In was developed in conjunction with the local community, and having been endorsed by Environment Canterbury and the Kaikoura District Council, forms the basis for the design and realignment of water management work programmes.

The committee has already identified the Clarence WaiauToa River, Waikoau Lyell Creek and Lake Rotorua as priority areas, and identified the outcomes for these catchments.

The committee will finish the meeting with a discussion on communications and how to best engage locals in zone committee processes, before receiving an update on biodiversity values in the Waiau Toa / Clarence River.

The Kaikoura zone committee was launched in mid-2011 as a joint committee of the Kaikoura District Council and Environment Canterbury. Monthly zone committee meetings are open to the public to attend, and attendees are given a chance to contribute to the meeting, if they wish.
