Easter story-telling at Pompallier Mission
Russell resident Morgan Pollock will take on her alter ego of ‘Morgs the Storyteller’ to bring fun for children and adults alike visiting Pompallier Mission, the NZ Historic Places Trust property in Russell, over Easter.
The grandmother of 11 will present a number of children’s stories she has written to visiting families as part of Pompallier Mission’s Easter entertainment.
“I’m really looking forward to sharing some of my stories with people at Pompallier Mission,” says Morgan.
“I haven’t performed to a large group before, though when I tell my stories to my own grandchildren or children of friends they’ve always been riveted – so I’m sure the kids will enjoy them.”
Many of Morgs’ stories have a theme of caring for the environment – or have messages that have age-old application.
“One of my stories talks about a boy whose pet dog is his conscience, and all the adventures that they get up to. Another story is about a dog who everybody thinks is really ugly – but the story shows clearly how looks are only skin deep,” she says.
“To find out more, people will have to come to Pompallier Mission over Easter!”
Morgan started writing children’s stories in the 1980s, and has recently returned to children’s story writing. Over the years, her 11 grandchildren have been the perfect sounding board for her work.
Morgan also works as a guide at Pompallier Mission where she thoroughly enjoys telling other stories about the fascinating history behind the Mission and its place in New Zealand history.
“I get a real kick out of introducing people to the history of Northland, and the positive feedback that I get from visitors who latch on to the absorbing stories here.”
She says storytelling a huge part of her life.
“It must be the Welsh blood!”
Morgs the Storyteller will entertain children at Pompallier Mission at 10.30am and 3.30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. An Easter Treasure Hunt will also take place on the same days, and guided tours of Pompallier Mission will operate throughout the weekend.
