Youth Group Supports Draft Unitary Plan Objectives
Youth climate organisation, Generation Zero, says it supports the focus of the Auckland Council's Draft Unitary Plan on
developing a quality, compact city.
The Draft Unitary Plan, released today, sets out the land-use designation for the next 30 years in order to design an
internationally competitive city and respond to Auckland’s growing population.
Generation Zero spokesperson, Dr Sudhvir Singh: “The way forward for Auckland is to meet the demands of the next
generation by providing access to job opportunities in our urban centers through quality, compact, European-style
living”
Generation Zero says that young people are crucial stakeholders in this debate as they will be the ones to inherit the
city that decision makers plan today.
Dr Singh; “Young people want to make the choice to live near their friends, with access to the job and educational
opportunities available in urban centers, rather than being exiled to the urban fringe”
The Draft Unitary Plan aims to enable Auckland to develop a productive, high quality urban center.
Dr Singh explains: “The Draft Unitary Plan will enable development in our urban centers. This will benefit Auckland in
the long term by enabling a transition away from crowded, congested roads and towards greater demand for public
transport.”
Submissions on the Draft Unitary Plan are open, and the public will have their say on the Plan in the weeks ahead.
Singh: “If Auckland wants to be the most livable city by 2040, then decision makers should be asking themselves what
young people want, and the overwhelming consensus is a quality, compact city.”
