National Jazz Festival Tauranga: 28 March – 1 April 2013
Tourism Bay of Plenty would like to invite you to New Zealand’s largest jazz festival and the third largest jazz festival in the world; the National Jazz Festival Tauranga. The festival will include a wide range of events and activities over Easter weekend, Thursday 28 March to Monday 1 April 2013.
It is the longest running jazz festival in the southern hemisphere, having been in operation for over 50 years.
A highlight of the 2013 festival is London-based Nathan Haines, performing his show The Poet’s Embrace. The show has received international critical acclaim and spent a month in the top 20 New Zealand album charts.
The festival also includes a tribute to the late, great Ella Fitzgerald by one of the country’s leading Jazz singers, Jennine Bailey; and Sons of Sinatra, a homage to today’s young lions including Michael Bublé, Harry Connick Jr. and Jamie Cullum.
Tauranga also plays host to the RIANZ Jazz Album of the Year Tui Award on Sunday 31 March. The finalists are Whirimako Black for Late Night Plays, Nathan Haines for The Poet's Embrace, and Jennifer Zea for The Latin Soul.
A plethora of performances will be held at the Baycourt Jazz Café, Jazz at Trinity, and Jazz Village. It will include the Downtown Carnival and the National Youth Jazz competition – now in its 36th year.
