Shopping, Tea and Companionship

Shopping, Tea and Companionship

Not everyone can get to their local shopping centre alone. Errands many of us take for granted such as visiting the post office or selecting a birthday present for a loved one, aren’t so simple for some. Manukau East Council of Social Services is working with Botany Town Centre to provide a shopping shuttle to and from the centre for locals in need of a helping hand.

In its seventh year, the service shuttles shoppers to and from the centre, and if necessary, organises a companion or helper during the trip.

Organiser Maureen McKechnie says the service is not just for the elderly and extends to anyone in need of the extra help. The only requirement is that shoppers can get on and off the shuttle by themselves.

“We are most impressed with Botany Town Centre who provides us with walkers, mobility scooters and wheelchairs to assist shoppers. This service is invaluable to many who cannot usually leave home alone,” she says.

Columbus Coffee, The Coffee Club and Starbucks at Botany Town Centre provide shoppers who use the service with a free tea or coffee during their visit. Running every second Thursday, for the duration of the year, shoppers need to book Monday prior by ringing 0800 632 677. Those who use the service are asked to contribute a $5 donation.

Botany Town Centre senior marketing manager Desiree Clark says the initiative has proved invaluable for many shoppers.

“We love seeing locals using the service regularly. It’s great to see the community taking advantage of this initiative,” she says. “The retailers have really come on board and helped with the support of the service, too.”
