Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter responds to Beacon Search in Tararua Ranges
At around mid day today (Fri 1st March) the Palmerston North Rescue helicopter responded to a request from the Rescue Coordination Centre NZ to assist with the search for an emergency Locator Beacon which had been activated in the Tararua Ranges. Following a beacon homing search a lone tramper was located in a steep sided ravine in the Arette Forks area near Mount Dundas. Access on foot was impossible and a St John Ambulance Advanced Paramedic was winched down to the tramper to assess his injuries and prepare him for extraction. The tramper, a 21 year old male from Palmerston North, had fallen 5 metres into a steep sided ravine suffering lacerations to the head, and was unable to climb out of the ravine. The tramper was winched to safety and transported to Palmerston North Hospital for further treatment.
For further in formation regarding the condition of the tramper please contact St John ambulance or Palmerston North Hospital.
