Drivers who flout 20kph speed limit past stationary school buses will be fined
ROTORUA 22.02.12: Rotorua District Council (RDC) and Rotorua Police are targeting drivers who exceed the 20kph legal
limit past school buses collecting or dropping off children and are warning that offending drivers will be fined.
The council and police have been recently working together to measure the speeds of vehicles travelling past stationary
school buses, and the results of those investigations have revealed that many motorists were not slowing down.
RDC road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson said their findings showed that motorists are still not getting the message
that they are putting children’s lives at risk by not following simple road safety rules.
“Warning letters have been sent to a large numbers of motorists in recent times reminding them of their obligations.
“Our message is simple, if you drive at more than 20kph past a stationary school bus you will be fined.”
Ms Lawson said fines can vary depending on the speed drivers go past the bus, however for driving past a stationary
school bus at 50kph motorists risk a $230 fine and 35 demerit points.
