Auckland Home Building Sector Starting To Move

The Mayor is describing the latest increase in building consent figures as a sign the home building sector in Auckland is starting to move.

Figures released by Statistics New Zealand show building consents in Auckland increased by 21 per cent last year to 4582.

Month on month, building consents in December in Auckland were up 48 per cent on December 2011, with the building of apartments and retirement dwellings a notable feature.

Around Auckland, the biggest contributors to the increase in activity were Flatbush, Takanini and Papakura in the south and Long Bay and Silverdale in the north.

“It’s great to see movement and the building industry being provided with a much needed boost,” says Len Brown. “It’s also pleasing to see an increase in housing stock meaning more Auckland families moving into new homes.”

“Our focus this year must remain on housing affordability, ensuring that not only are more homes being built, but Aucklanders also have access to homes they can afford.

”Auckland Council is working closely in collaboration with government, the private sector, NGOs and housing agencies to find joint solutions to this complex problem.”
