Illegal rubbish dumping not tolerated in Hutt City
Illegal rubbish dumping will not be tolerated in Hutt City, says General Manager Bruce Sherlock.
Two people have already been prosecuted this year for dumping rubbish in Wainuiomata and given fines of up to $400 plus clean-up costs.
“We want Lower Hutt to be a great place to live, work and play and that means keeping our streets, neighbourhoods and open spaces free from unsightly rubbish and doing all we can to prosecute offenders.
“When the Wainuiomata Landfill closed at the end of last year* we acknowledged community concerns there could be an increase in illegal rubbish dumping and we’re committed to stamping this out.
“We offer plenty of options for people wanting to get rid of their household waste so there is no excuse.
“Weekly kerbside rubbish and recycling collections run throughout the city and we provide community recycling stations where people can bring their recycling free-of-charge, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
“The city also boasts a first-class landfill at Silverstream, and a transfer station at Seaview which is only seven kilometres from the centre of Wainuiomata.
“Importantly though this is not a problem unique to Wainuiomata. Every year we investigate hundreds of incidents of illegal rubbish dumping across the city.
“I want to encourage residents to work with us to keep Hutt City beautiful and report anyone they see dumping rubbish by calling us on 570 6666.”
Anyone found to be illegally dumping rubbish can expect a fine ranging from $100 to $400 plus clean-up costs depending on the severity of the offence.
