Summer on Queens Wharf just got better
Music, food, live painting sessions and outdoor theatre see Queens Wharf come alive as the perfect lunchtime and après
work destination on Auckland’s waterfront this summer.
An outdoor living room space has been created at the entrance of Queens Wharf for people to eat, play and lounge, in the
heart of the CBD waterfront. The Summer on Queens programme was launched in early December and returns for 2013 on 18
January with two distinct elements, Kai on Queens and Play on Queens.
Kai on Queens is a lunchtime offering where visitors to the wharf will be able to get a bite to eat from a range of
local mobile food vendors each Wednesday and Friday lunchtime through until April. Kai on Queens have a range of
suppliers on their books with everything from salad and Mexican, to pizza, Japanese, gourmet bratwurst and frozen
yoghurt available. Each week the vendors vary to ensure there is always something new to sample. To complement the food
offering DJs will be on Queens Wharf during lunchtimes.
Play on Queens offers a series of free midweek pop-up events that will surprise, delight and sometimes challenge the
audience. The January and February programme covers live painting with local artists, drawing classes and a special
installation for Valentine’s Day. As part of Play on Queens the quirky and original theatre troupe ‘Three Queens’
returns to Queens Wharf on Wednesday 23 January with three short plays based on the trials and tribulations of love and
lust.
A highlight of the activity on Queens Wharf is the Artbox. The Artbox is the latest incarnation of a 40 foot shipping
container that was created for the Wellington Waterfront during the Rugby World Cup in 2011. It has been transformed
into a versatile gallery space with multiple monitors, floor to ceiling light boxes and even a cinematic experience
complete with comfy sofas and a five metre screen. Each month a new exhibition will come into the space.
The first exhibition in the Artbox is Love & Dreaming by international film and video artist Burnett-Rose. Love & Dreaming looks at the idea of love and marriage and the impact Hollywood mythology has on it. Love & Dreaming runs from this week until 22 February and is open from 10.30am – 5pm.

Summer on Queens.
