Elma Turner Library closed following fire
Nelson’s Elma Turner Library will remain closed for the rest of the day following a fire in the adjoining building this morning.
Staff and the public were safely evacuated when the fire broke out in a storeroom at the back of the building on the corner of Halifax and Tahaki Streets that houses Prego Mediterranean Foods.
The Fire Service is still on site. There has been extensive smoke through the library and staff will allowed back in to help with the damage assessment as soon as the Fire Service gives the all clear.
Council’s Customer Service Centre in Civic House was also closed briefly due to the amount of smoke from the fire across the road.
