Holiday Safety: Simulated Crash Scene And Ruru Billboards

Simulated Crash Scene And Ruru Billboards To Help Spread Holiday Season Road Safety Message

ROTORUA 10.12.12: Rotorua District Council (RDC) has teamed up with local road safety enforcers to help ‘paint the town red’ with road safety messages for the holiday period.

The tagline ‘Alcohol Kills Driving Skills’ is again part of a regional road safety initiative over the festive season with Ruru the Road Safety Morepork promoting his message on new red background billboards.

Road safety ambassadors and staff from the council, local Fire Service, St John, and Police are working together at City Focus, Central Mall and other high profile locations throughout the week [10 to 16 December] to help Ruru spread the word on driving safe over the next few months.

RDC road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson said these agencies have jumped on board because they are the ones who have to deal with the carnage on the roads.

“We have a simulated crash scene, including a crashed car and fake body under a shroud, there’s a booze bus, speed camera vans, and the Grim Reaper’s out and about again.

“There are also personnel onsite available to talk to people about what they do and see. This is a valuable opportunity to educate our community to help prevent tragedies over the holiday season and beyond.”

Ms Lawson says the team is also handing out a quiz form and people can go into a draw to win a $100 petrol voucher simply by answering a few short safety questions.
