Fabulous fiesta moves generous Kiwis to give
Emotions ran high at the NPH New Zealand Latin Festival, held on 26 November, as guests and volunteers were moved to dig
deep into their hearts and pockets to give orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Caribbean a better
chance at life.
Held at the new Atico Cocina restaurant in Victoria Park, even the NPH New Zealand Director herself, Kristina Cavit, was
moved to tears during her welcome speech as she explained how even just the cost of the $50 event ticket helped feed an
NPH child for months.
“I asked a 15 year old girl in Bolivia what she would spend a donation on, if given just to her. She told me clothes
were helpful, and she would like a new pair of shoes, but mostly she wanted books so she could go to school,” said
Cavit, "Sorry I'm so emotional, but it’s just so hard to think she is still over there in this situation. I think if it
were our New Zealand kids we would be moved to help.”
A fantastic night was had by all, with entertainment from the wild Brazilian Diva salsa dancers, music from the Auckland
Mexican mariachi band, mouthwatering tapas served from eight of the country’s where NPH has orphanages and guest sipping
sangria all evening.
Guests bid on live and silent auctions, and lucky winners took home amazing jewelry by Zora Boyd for Karen Walker, an
eight person holiday batch in Tutukaka, a week at Terrace Down’s and fabulous furniture from Cavit & Co.
All auction items were generously donated by local businesses in support of NPH, and festival guests were able to
purchase exclusive items on the night, including jewelry from the sustainably harvested Andean collection, now available
for the first time in New Zealand at Cavit & Co.
Amongst the honored guests were Aidee Walker (Outrageous Fortune), Luanne Gordon (The Strip and King Kong) and Aaron
Ward (Nothing Trivial) who snapped up an original artwork by Tarnos McNab.
With all proceeds going to the kids of NPH, the event raised over $15,000 which will be used to provide much needed food
and clothing for the NPH orphan children of Peru and Bolivia.
“I made a promise to these children that I would come back to my country and find people to help them. This event has
helped me hold up my promise and proved that kiwis have big hearts and don’t have to be millionaire’s to help! Bit by
bit we can make the lives of these children better and give them the chance that every child deserves,” says Cavit.
