Macandrew Bay Water Main Renewal

Macandrew Bay Water Main Renewal

Dunedin (Friday, 30 November 2012) – The Dunedin City Council is commencing water main renewal works in the Macandrew Bay area on 3 December.

The work is necessary to replace the existing watermain which has had numerous breaks, some of which have resulted in unplanned water shutdowns affecting the local community.

Before Christmas, the first section of the new water main will be laid, starting on Portobello Road opposite the end of Greenacres Street, through the Macandrew Bay Beach Reserve car park, and continuing on Portobello Road to the junction with Marion Street.

During the period 3 -14 December, vehicle access to the Macandrew Bay Beach Reserve car park may be restricted as a result of the works. Pedestrian access will be maintained and vehicle access reinstated during weekends where possible.
Traffic control will be also in place on Portobello Road during the works. Delays should be minimal but should be considered when travelling.

DCC Engineering Project Manager Camilla Bennett says “In order to minimise disruption to the general public and users of the beach reserve, our contractors have agreed to leave the car park and Portobello Road area free of work over the summer holiday period from 20 December 2012 to 1 February 2013.
“Works will recommence after the Christmas break on 14 January, on the second section in Marion and Hellyer Streets.”

Letters will be sent to any residents who may be directly affected prior to works being undertaken. If temporary water shutdowns are scheduled, (for example when the new water main is connected to the existing system), affected residents will be notified accordingly.
