Dogs seized after Ōtaki attack
Council animal control officers seized two dogs yesterday after two women were attacked in Ōtaki.
Both women suffered serious bites in the late afternoon attack and were taken to Palmerston North hospital by ambulance.
Police and animal control officers attended the scene and two dogs believed to be responsible for the attack were seized
under section 57 of the Dog Control Act.
It is understood the first woman attacked was known to the dogs, but wasn’t the owner. She suffered extensive bites to
her arms and legs. The second woman came to her aid and suffered a serious bite to her upper leg.
Group Manager Community Services Tamsin Evans says Council staff are working with police to establish exactly what
happened and to determine what legal action may be taken against the owner.
"This was a very nasty attack that shocked experienced animal control officers. It must have been a terrifying ordeal
for the women involved and has left them with serious wounds that will take time to heal.”
Both women are in a stable condition in Palmerston North hospital.
The attack happened on private property and the dogs concerned are described as pit bull type dogs.
Inquiries into the incident are continuing and Police say they’d like to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack or
