Porirua Softball Coach, Alex Carter, Wins the 2012 Trish McKelvey Volunteer Leadership Award
Alex Carter, coach of Porirua City United’s Premier One Women’s team, PCU’s Under 18 Women’s team as well as the
Wellington under 19 Women’s Representative team and Assistant Coach of the Wellington Premier Women’s National Fast
pitch team, has been awarded the 2012 Trish McKelvey Volunteer Leadership Award, presented by Sport Wellington at their
Annual General Meeting.
This award, named after Trish McKelvey, a long serving, former chairperson of Sport Wellington, recognises a volunteer
who has provided outstanding leadership in the sports sector over the preceding years as an administrator, coach,
official, player or a combination of these. The recipient will have demonstrated leadership qualities which have ‘made a
difference’.
At the regional level Alex has coached teams that have won nine different Wellington and Intercity club competitions
over the past 10 seasons.
Alex’s Wellington under 19 Women’s team won their tournament at the nationals this year. It is the third national
tournament that has seen Alex as the coach of the winning team. At the end of the tournament, Alex was named Head Coach
of the tournament team, the 3rd time he has achieved this.
At the national level Alex was the Head Coach of NZ Girls Development team that attended the international youth cup in
Sydney Australia. The team played against seven Australian teams including two under 19 teams and the Australian under
17 team. The Development Team coached by Alex won 6 from 10 games, which was the most wins by any NZ team at this
tournament.
Sport Wellington CEO Phil Gibbons said that “Alex’s achievements signalled to the selection panel that he is a skilled
coach, an effective and respected leader and a volunteer that has achieved a significant amount for his players, his
club, his region, and his country. Whilst this list of achievements is quite remarkable in itself, it is made even more
significant by the fact that Alex has achieved all of this having been legally blind since 2006.”
This is the second award won by Alex this year. In October he won the Coach of the Year Award at the Porirua Trust
Sports Awards.
