Hawke’s Bay’s 1st MOBILE APP TOURS

On Tuesday, Hawke’s Bay’s first mobile app tours are launched with the potential of many more to come. Lyn Cheyne has put together three mobile app tours about the history behind Napier’s settlement relevant to the Ahuriri Coastline and Marine Parade – Earthquake 1931, Marine Parade and Port to Point. These tours are pre-Art Deco and add to Napier’s tourist offerings.

Downloadable as a single I-phone or Android app, the three tours self-guide visitors along Napier’s coastline telling a little of the history and showing images of what it used to look like in the earliest days of the city and before the 1931 earthquake. It’s ideal for people with not a lot of time to learn more about the beginnings of Napier as they walk and discover the coastal sights.

“There are some fascinating stories about Napier and Hawke’s Bay and I have just focused on a tiny piece. Visitors and locals alike can learn about the Thirty Thousand Club, the Old Courthouse and the Naumai boiler right on the spot where they walk, said Lyn. “Making the tours available as an app makes it quick, easy and fun with the visitor being their own guide and working to their own timetable.” Images have been sourced from the Napier City Council, Hawke’s Bay’s Museum and Art Gallery and the Alexander Turnbull Library. The “Walk the History” app is available from the I=phone and Android app stores for around NZ$6 for the three tours. Lyn has ensured the app can also be downloaded by scanning a QR code.

“I think there is unlimited potential – for cruise ship visitors not already booked on tours, backpackers and accommodation guests as well as all our friends and family that come to stay in our region. I’d like to expand the concept and will be talking to other organisation about the possibilities of developing further tours of historical buildings, places and trails in the Hawke’s Bay region,” says Lyn.
