MEDIA ADVISORY

28 November 2012

Canterbury Water Kaikoura Zone Committee Meeting

The Kaikoura Zone Committee will meet at Memorial Hall on Wednesday 28 November for its monthly water management public meeting.

The meeting will begin with an update from the Regional Committee, which looks at region-wide environmental restoration and repair; land use impacts on water quality; as well as water storage, distribution and efficiency options.

The committee will then discuss engaging with youth in water management with the possibility of hosting a youth hui early next year to ensure the perspective of young people is being captured.

The committee will also hear a number of presentations on Environment Canterbury’s proposed Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP), which provides the framework to facilitate delivery of the community’s aspirations for water management – as set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

The first presentation will provide an overview of the plan and what it means for the Kaikoura Zone. Subsequent presentations will focus on nutrient management, self-audited farm management, and the experience of the Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee.

The committee will finish the meeting with a discussion on its Immediate Steps biodiversity funding programme. In December last year, the zone committee finalised its priorities for Immediate Steps funding support.

At Wednesday’s meeting the committee will discuss the criteria it has set keeping in mind the recommendations made in its recently completed Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management.
