Help Needed to Solve Mystery of Missing Books
Moriarty has stolen the best library books to read this summer but Sherlock, Watson and Mycroft are on the trail!
Help them track Moriarty down by joining in this year’s South Taranaki Libraries Summer Reading Programme.
The programme, now in its 10th year, is offered free to all South Taranaki children aged 5-12 years during the Summer
School Holiday period. Registrations open on 5 December but spaces are limited so you need to register early.
The theme of the programme is The Great Book Mystery, Te Pirikoko Whakaharahara o te Pukapuka and South Taranaki joins
libraries across New Zealand in solving the mystery of what to read this summer.
South Taranaki District Children’s Librarian, Pam Jones says the goal of the programme is to encourage young people to
keep reading over the long summer holiday break.
“Statistics shows that children who continue to read during the summer holiday period are more likely to remain at the
same reading level as when they finished school in December and in many cases to have even gone up a level,” says Pam.
“The programme also aims to involve caregivers in their children’s reading at home, and to develop a positive
relationship between children, libraries and library staff,” she says.
During the programme each child will ‘report-in’ to a library staff member three times throughout the summer.
“A special area has been created in the libraries for the ‘report- in’ so customers should not be surprised to find that
instead of walking into a library they appear to have entered a detective agency,” says Pam.
Activities throughout January will include spy games and code breaking, as well a number of mysterious events.
So don’t get caught without a good book this summer - hunt out that spy glass and invisible ink and join the other great
detectives at your local LibraryPlus.
